A smaller AKARI for bedrooms, reading corners and hallways. Like every piece in the series, it's washi paper over bamboo ribbing, made by hand in Gifu, where Noguchi first saw the town's lantern makers at work in 1951. Soft, diffused, quietly sculptural.

The story

Isamu Noguchi & AKARI

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a Japanese-American sculptor who treated light as another material to shape. In 1951 he visited Gifu, a town known for its paper lanterns, and began the AKARI series: washi paper over bamboo ribbing, named with the Japanese word for light, brightness and lightness. More than seventy years on, each shade is still made by hand by Ozeki & Co. in Gifu, stretched over wooden forms Noguchi designed.
