Isamu Noguchi & AKARI
Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a Japanese-American sculptor who treated light as another material to shape. In 1951 he visited Gifu, a town known for its paper lanterns, and began the AKARI series: washi paper over bamboo ribbing, named with the Japanese word for light, brightness and lightness. More than seventy years on, each shade is still made by hand by Ozeki & Co. in Gifu, stretched over wooden forms Noguchi designed.
